Measles Outbreak in Upstate: Over 130 Local Students and Staff Quarantined, Health Officials Urge Vaccination

More than 130 people are in quarantine in South Carolina after a measles outbreak. The Department of Public Health says the outbreak has affected schools, an airport, and a church. Quarantine measures were announced on November 21, 2025. Health officials are working to limit the spread of the virus. Since October 2, there have been 52 measles cases linked to the Upstate outbreak and three unrelated cases, for a total of 55. Eight new cases were reported this week. Four of these are linked to known exposures. The sources of the other cases are not yet known.

Most of those in quarantine are students and staff from three public schools in the Upstate region. Lyman Elementary has 57 people in quarantine. Boiling Springs Middle School has 55, and D.R. Hill Middle School has one. The health department has not said how many are students or staff, or how many active cases are at each school. When a student tests positive, all unvaccinated students are sent home to reduce the risk of further spread.

One infected person worked at Greenville Spartanburg International Airport on November 10 and 11. This may have exposed travelers and employees. Another person attended Way of Truth Church in Inman on the evening of November 7 and the morning of November 9. Health officials advise anyone who was at these locations during those times to watch for symptoms and contact a doctor if they feel sick…
