Clemson Professor Joseph Ryan Honored with Prestigious Class of ’39 Award for Community Impact

Joseph Ryan, the Sue Stanzione Distinguished Professor in Clemson University’s College of Education, has received the Class of ’39 Award for Excellence. The award was established by Clemson’s Class of 1939 to mark their 50th anniversary. It is given each year to a faculty member whose service over five years benefits students, the university, and the community.

Ryan founded and directs the ClemsonLIFE™ program, a post-secondary initiative for young adults with intellectual disabilities. Under his leadership, ClemsonLIFE has served as a model for over 100 colleges and universities worldwide. His work has expanded educational opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities and influenced policy at state and federal levels.

Ryan has published over 100 works and served as editor of the journal Beyond Behavior for 12 years. His research on crisis interventions in schools has shaped policies in Louisiana, South Carolina, and Wisconsin, and has contributed to proposed federal legislation.
