GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) — Pets can be cute and cuddly, but they come with a big responsibility, with some animals being at least a 10-year commitment.
Staff at the Greenville Human Society said that while gifting an animal as a Christmas present may seem like a good idea, all too often, animals are returned back to the shelter or even left out on the streets.
“The number one issue behind pets being dropped off and being born unwanted is the neglect of spaying and neutering your pets. Get your pets altered. You’re not going to have any unwanted litters,” said Javy Pagan with the humane society. “That’s why we exist. We have a spay and neuter clinic.”
Earlier this week, the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office discovered a laundry basket full of abandoned puppies on the side of the road. Though the smallest puppy died and another suffered seizures, the rest of the litter are in the hands of Greenville County Animal Care and the sheriff’s office.
Additionally, shelter leaders said this is not the first time they have had to rescue animals in unfortunate situations. Bringing animals back to the humane society causes the animal more stress, making it difficult to rehome later…
