Spartanburg man charged after stealing cop car, leading I-26 pursuit

A Spartanburg man is facing multiple charges after authorities say he stole a deputy’s patrol vehicle and led law enforcement on a multi-county pursuit down the interstate on Saturday night, Dec. 20.

According to Lt. Graham McLellan with the Spartanburg Cunty Sheriff’s Office, William Waters, 34, of Spartanburg, suffered a mental health episode, which led him to steal a deputy’s vehicle and lead law enforcement on a pursuit down Interstate 26. Waters is charged with grand larceny, driving under the influence, and failure to stop for a blue light.
