SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) — Spartanburg Medical Center (SMC) entered into a $100,000 settlement agreement with the US Department of Health & Human Services Office of Inspector General on Nov. 12, resolving allegations that the facility violated the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA).
The settlement stems from a May 2024 incident when officials said SMC reportedly transferred a patient who had suffered a large hematoma and active bleeding from a prior surgery performed eight days earlier at another facility.
