GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) – The Greenville Zoo announced that Kiko, the first giraffe born at the zoo, has died due to a freak accident at the Toronto Zoo.
On January 1, officials said Kiko was given access to an additional area of his behind-the-scenes habitat and was caught in an opening door. As a result, Kiko panicked and sustained injuries that proved fatal.
Kiko’s body has been sent to the University of Guelph for a full postmortem, and an investigation is underway by the Toronto Zoo’s Health and Safety Services team.
Kiko was born at the Greenville Zoo in 2012 before being transferred to the Toronto Zoo. Kiko was a Masai giraffe, an endangered species with only over 43,000 left in the wild. In 2018, they were listed as Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)…
