Spartanburg County puts off vote on data center as concern surfaces

When Spartanburg County Council members passed first reading of an ordinance to allow tax incentives for a $3 billion economic development project dubbed “Project Spero,” it appeared that the county would land its second data center investment in less than a year.

That was November, only a few months after NorthMark Strategies announced that it would redevelop the former Kohler Co. factory on South Pine Street for use as a high-tech computing facility. The NorthMark data center is expected to be in operation by mid-to-late 2026.
