Ankle monitor on, gun in hand: teen committed armed crimes before escaping jail, prosecutors say

LAURENS COUNTY, S.C. — A man who pleaded guilty to violent crimes, a string of armed robberies committed as he wore an ankle monitor, and a jail escape is going to prison for 15 years.

Eighth Circuit Solicitor David M. Stumbo’s Office said 18-year-old Travilous Kyndrell Austin pleaded guilty on Thursday to two counts each of second-degree burglary and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. He also pleaded guilty to one count each of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, discharging a firearm into a vehicle and escaping.

The charges extend back to October of 2024 when Austin shot into a vehicle during a dispute. A few months later, prosecutors said he was involved in multiple burglaries across Clinton and Laurens, during which he was armed…
