As developers turn to West Greenville, affordable housing dwindles

Years of high-profile developments near West Greenville like Pendleton Street and Unity Park are pushing up property values in one of the city’s remaining neighborhoods considered affordable.

Allison Smith, 66, and John Smith, 67, sat outside of their daughter’s West Greenville home on a recent afternoon, soaking in the sun and playing with their granddaughter. The Smiths moved to the modest neighborhood about 11 years ago to be close to family.

John Smith points at some older brick homes that had been boarded up the first five years his family lived in the neighborhood. Since moving there, however, he’s seen older homes refurbished and sold for around $300,000, while up the road closer to Pendleton Street, some new builds are going for close to $600,000…
