LANDRUM—City officials and the Landrum Police Department are urging motorists to stay alert after an officer narrowly avoided being struck by a vehicle in a school zone earlier this week.
A video shared online shows a black SUV traveling through the school zone in downtown Landrum, which was also an active work zone at the time, appearing to disregard an officer directing traffic. The officer, whose back was briefly turned, noticed the approaching vehicle just in time to jump out of the way, avoiding what officials described as a potentially serious accident.
“The driver of this vehicle was obviously operating distracted to have missed all the cones, lights, workers around the area, and the officer standing with his reflective vest on in the middle of the lane directing traffic,” officials said in a social media post…
