Expert: Brine treatments on Spartanburg Co. roads not a ‘fail-safe’

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – Crews were hard at work at the Spartanburg County’s brine facility, mixing, loading and spraying more than 12,000 gallons of the solution on Thursday.

Officials with the county’s roads and bridges department said brine, a highly concentrated solution of salt and water, creates a protective barrier between the pavement and wintry precipitation.

“When it goes on the road, it creates a barrier between the asphalt and the ice,” said manager Richie Smith. “The intent is to help melt and prevent precipitation from freezing as quickly.”…
