Deputies warn public about new scam targeting Upstate residents

ANDERSON COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) — The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a scam involving fraudulent emails that claim to be from the Anderson County Planning and Zoning Commission.

The scam specifically targets individuals who have submitted requests to the County Council for community funding. According to deputies, the emails falsely inform recipients that their funding requests have been approved. The messages then instruct the residents to submit a payment to the county before any funds can be released to them.

The scam was uncovered after an individual who received one of the emails recognized suspicious elements, referred to as red flags and notified local authorities.
