Anderson Sears location declared abandoned, Rural King may get tax credit

City officials gave a boost to the prospects of a national brand opening at the Anderson Mall.

The Anderson City Council unanimously passed a resolution Feb. 9 declaring the former Sears location at the mall abandoned. The action could make it easier for the farm and home retailer Rural King to establish a store there by potentially qualifying the project for special incentives, such as tax credits.

City staff recommended approval of the resolution, which designates the building as abandoned under South Carolina law, Section 12-67-120. Under the law, developers can claim a state tax credit equal to 25% of qualified rehabilitation expenses for retail spaces.
