Greenville County Schools approves new AI policy: Board of Trustees notes

Approved: Artificial intelligence policy addition

The board approved a new policy regarding artificial intelligence and educational technology in schools. The policy addition received initial approval during the board’s committee of the whole meeting on Feb. 10.

The policy revision states that AI has the potential to offer “valuable educational opportunities” for students and teachers. It outlines that AI should be used in an ethical manner that emphasizes student privacy and security. The policy also requires that the use of AI be transparent to parents and guardians.

District administration will be required to develop consistent procedures for how students may use of AI across all schools, according to the policy. Superintendent Burke Royster will also need to develop an administrative rule with additional details and procedures for the implementation of the new board policy…
