DARLINGTON, S.C. — The future of Greenville-Pickens Speedway returned to the national spotlight Sunday when Fox Sports announcer Mike Joy urged race fans to get involved in efforts to preserve the historic South Carolina track during the broadcast of the Goodyear 400 at Darlington Raceway.
The half‑mile oval, opened in 1946, has faced increasing pressure from developers as local officials continue discussions about the property’s long‑term status. The situation mirrors recent losses across the Southeast, including Myrtle Beach Speedway, which closed and was demolished in 2020.
Joy highlighted those concerns on today’s broadcast, pointing to the shrinking number of historic short tracks still standing. “We lost Myrtle Beach Speedway not long ago, and Greenville-Pickens Speedway is facing the same pressure from developers,” Joy said. “I mean, they are closing in, council meetings, county and city council folks want to save Greenville-Pickens Speedway.”…
