Threats, planned protests lead to Upstate park closure

WILLIAMSTON, S.C. (WSPA) — Mayor of Williamston, Rocky Burgess, has ordered Mineral Springs Park to close this Friday at 5 p.m. through Saturday at 7 a.m. due to threats and planned protests. This decision was made in response to concerns regarding a registered sex offender present at a scheduled worship service, aiming to ensure public safety and prevent potential conflict.

“I want to address a situation head-on so there is no confusion,” Mayor Burgess said.

“I do not have the legal authority to prevent a registered sex offender from being present at Mineral Spring Park during a scheduled worship service. At the same time, there have been claims circulating that I am somehow trying to protect that individual, which is absolutely not true.”…
