City officials release new details on cause of June 16 downtown fire

A carelessly tossed cigarette on a rear balcony caused a multi-alarm fire that spread to an adjoining downtown building and displaced 15 residents, according to Lebanon city officials.

Lebanon Mayor Sherry Capello and Fire Chief A.J. Sweitzer told LebTown that a lit cigarette was thrown into a smoking receptacle on an upper floor rear balcony at 736 Cumberland St., then flared up and spread to the attached building at 734 Cumberland St.

The first floors of 734 and 736 Cumberland were occupied by the temporarily closed Downtown Lounge and Level Eleven Marketing. Both had apartments on their upper floors…
