I-83 widening: Houses being torn down as work progresses toward mainline reconstruction

Crews have started tearing down houses near Interstate 83 in preparation for widening the highway from four to six lanes in the coming years.

The houses once stood in a neighborhood nestled just below the I-83 South on-ramp from Route 30. Residents expressed a few years ago that they were sad to have to leave the area.

“I like it back here,” Latisha Sterner, who lived close to the former Central York School District campus, said at the time. “I wish it wasn’t happening.”

The demolition of the houses started earlier this month, and the work is expected to be completed by mid-July, said Dave Thompson, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation.

PennDOT plans to widen the highway from four to six lanes between the North George Street (Exit 22) and the East Market Street (Exit 19) interchanges.

The construction of the mainline remains in design, PennDOT says.

It is going through constructability reviews, final design and environmental permitting, Thompson said.
