HARRISBURG, Pa. (WKBN) – The historic Allegheny River has been named 2024 Pennsylvania River of the Year.

The river received the designation by a public vote, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR).
The Allegheny beat out the Youghiogheny by 1,095 votes for the top spot with a total of 8,307. Youghiogheny received 7,212 votes and the Lackawaxen River received 4,740.
The 325-mile Allegheny River begins in Potter County and flows north to New York and South through six counties in Western Pennsylvania before meeting up with the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh and then flows into the Ohio River, providing drinking water for more than 1 million people.
According to DCNR, the O-non-dowa-gah (Seneca Nation) called the river Allegheny Ohi: yo’ (beautiful river), the Lenni Lenape (Delaware Nation) named it welhik-heny (most beautiful stream), and French settlers referred to it as La Belle Riviere.
