State funds to pay for removal of dangerous intersection

SHARON, Pa. (WKBN)- The Shapiro Administration announced it will invest $13 million in traffic safety improvements across the commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Many residents have asked the city to close this intersection at Spencer Avenue and Route 62 for a few years.

The city has been awarded $380,000 of the $13 million to remove the traffic signal, extend the median, and restrict turns at the intersection. Turnarounds will also be created for local traffic.

This removal comes after long discussions with PennDOT and the community. In 2021, 43-year-old Michael Davies was killed after a crash at this intersection. Since his death, signs have remained along the intersection calling for its closure.

In 2022, the city put off closing the intersection. Instead, PennDOT made some signal changes and cleared the tree line. Still, several accidents continued to occur.

First News is working to find out when the construction will start.
