‘Ring’ no longer allowing police to access camera footage

(WHTM) – “Ring” will no longer allow police to request and access doorbell camera footage.

The Amazon-owned app has long helped investigators solve crimes but the company says conversations about protection versus privacy led to the change.

Fran Chardo, Dauphin County DA said, “I understand they want to protect privacy but this isn’t inside someone’s home, it’s outside you don’t know where the bad guy has run – there’s not always an ability to articulate probable cause and this isn’t an area where someone has a reasonable expectation of privacy, it’s on the street.”

The DA says if someone wants to share their ring footage with police they can.
