HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — Many groups set up displays at the State Capitol, and sometimes these displays include animals.
But it isn’t often they have birds of prey. Hawk Mountain Sanctuary brought two of their animal ambassadors to the Capitol today. Jessica Gary handled one of the birds.

“This is an American kestrel. It’s the smallest member of the falcon family, a cousin to the peregrine falcon.”
Lyric Paskel is handling a red-tailed hawk. “She is a migrating bird and we are celebrating migration month in October.”
Hawk Mountain trains conservationists from around the world
The reason for the visit? The General Assembly, in House Resolution 359, has declared October 2024 as “Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Bird Migration Month.”
Hawk Mountain is celebrating nine decades of work.
“It’s our 90th anniversary that we have been counting raptors as they migrate down along the Kittatinny Ridge. We count six daytime or diurnal raptors and we have four months of data for each year going back to 1934.
