YORK COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — A tree planted in York County Friday went on quite a “mission” before arriving here.
Dallastown Area Intermediate School students planted a “Moon Tree” this morning.
NASA began the “Moon Tree” program 50 years ago when an Apollo mission orbited the moon with tree seeds, which were then returned to Earth, grown and distributed across the country.
This tree actually traveled beyond the moon aboard the Orion spacecraft two years ago.

“It’s amazing, from the delivery of the tree yesterday, to them inquiring almost every day after the application process, ‘Did you hear anything about the moon tree?’ and then just the joy for these kiddos when we said we got it, it’s coming,” Teacher at Dallastown Area Intermediate Janis Mars said.
The seed for this Moon Tree spent four weeks in space before returning to Earth.
