Taking a look at WellSpan’s medical helicopter

(WHTM) — Monday, Oct. 28 is National First Responders Day and some responders get to a scene even more quickly than others, in a helicopter.

This is WellSpan’s “Wellflight” chopper. Medical evacuation – or “Medevac” – helicopters can cut a one-hour ambulance ride to just 15 minutes.

The rush doesn’t stop when the chopper lands at the hospital.

“When they arrive there the folks inside where they’re going to the trauma bay where they’re going to an ICU floor, they are well aware there and throughout that team is ready for them when they get here,” Director of Prehospital Services for WellSpan Chad Deardorff said.

“Here” – in that case – is WellSpan York Hospital. Patients might be taken from an accident scene or from one hospital to another that has more specialized care.
