What’s Going Around: Pneumonia, croup, hand, foot and mouth

UPMC Children’s Community Pediatrics is seeing cases of hand, foot, and mouth and walking pneumonia.

WellSpan Pediatric Medicine Physicians across the Midsate are seeing respiratory infections, enterovirus, the common cold and some cases of walking pneumonia. They are also seeing asthma attacks and seasonal allergies.

“To avoid the circulating illnesses, practice good hygiene, get a good night’s sleep, and stay up to date on your immunizations,” said Dr. Christopher Russo, pediatrician at WellSpan Family & Pediatric Medicine in York.

Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health Physicians Roseville Pediatrics reports a lot of coughing from a variety of viruses and ongoing pneumonia cases. They saw a slight decrease in strep throat cases but an increase in croup.

Dr. Joan Thode offered the following advice:

“Wet coughs are due to air from the lungs passing through mucous. In the case of pneumonia, where the mucous forms as a response to viral and bacterial cells in the lungs, the cough is wet and often sounds deep and comes with fatigue, fever, possible chest pain.
