Waynesboro’s retired police chief takes on new role in Harrisburg Diocese

Deacon Michael McGovern has been appointed director of permanent deacons for the Diocese of Harrisburg.

McGovern, who was ordained as a deacon in September 2020, will oversee the direction, formation and administration of the permanent diaconate, according to a community announcement. He began his new position on Sept. 8.

McGovern recently retired after a 30-year career in public safety, serving as chief of police for the Washington Township Police Department in Waynesboro. He will continue his ministry responsibilities with Saint Andrew Catholic Church in addition to his new obligations.
