New executive director joins food bank

Neighbor Helping Neighbor Food Bank at 300A S. Carlisle St. in New Bloomfield recently welcomed David Counsil as its new executive director. Counsil brings more than two decades of nonprofit experience to the organization at a time when the need for assistance is expected to grow.

A Newport resident, he previously served in leadership roles with Harrisburg Area Community College, Tri-County Community Action and Boy Scouts of America. His background in nonprofit administration, fundraising and staff coordination made him a strong fit for the position, which he said aligns with his lifelong commitment to helping others.

“Food insecurity is a big deal,” he said. “Approximately one in eight of our neighbors face food insecurity, and out of those, one in six are typically children. Being able to help lead an organization that does such good work for our neighbors is very near and dear to my heart.”

Neighbor Helping Neighbor serves approximately 1,500 families each month throughout Perry County. The food bank primarily provides supplemental groceries to households but may soon find itself filling a more vital role as federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits ran out of funds on Nov. 1…
