Heart-to-Heart: Diabetes and cardiovascular disease

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHP) — Diabetes is one of the most common diseases in the United States. Every single person that suffers from it is also more likely to develop heart disease.

Type 2 alone has affected approximately 35 million people in the United States.

“Diabetes is an extremely common disease, and really what it is, it’s a disease of sugar or glucose handling in the body,” said Ed Tadajweski, an interventional cardiologist with WellSpan. “Type 2 diabetes is what we call adult onset diabetes. It is much more common than type 1, and it’s a disease where instead of not having enough insulin, which effects your glucose or sugar level, what happens is your body doesn’t respond to insulin as well.”…
