Sometimes, you have to leave home to find yourself.

That was definitely true for acclaimed international artist Alteronce Gumby, and it’s true for too many Harrisburg natives who feel they can’t fulfill their dreams in central Pennsylvania.

We heard it loud and clear from Harrisburg University students who participated in our latest roundtable on the city’s economic development. These students are bursting at the seams with creativity and drive, but they see nowhere to channel it in Harrisburg.

The story of Alteronce Gumby is a glaring example of why many youths have to leave our region to discover their unique and undeniable genius. But how proud their community is when they return home, accomplished and successful.

That pride was evident Saturday evening at the Susquehanna Museum of Art (SAM) as Gumby stood before a room of beaming friends and relatives, all doting on his every word…
