Local couple provides 24/7 community library and pantry in front yard

YORK COUNTY, Pa. — What started as a tribute to Amber Wire’s late mother has grown into a Little Free Library — now also a food pantry — stocked with books, groceries, and even pet food. It’s open 24/7 for anyone who needs it, no questions asked.

Wire says the idea for her Little Free Library began five years ago after her mother, Betty Poole, passed away, leaving behind over 1,000 books. “When she passed, she left us over about 1000 books in her library,” Wire said. “It was very important for me to get that little free library built for the community to honor my mom.”

Originally just a library, Amber added a food pantry after learning that a neighbor was concerned about SNAP benefits being paused during the shutdown. The library and pantry serve the entire community, offering books for all ages, groceries, bags, and sometimes pet food…
