Pennsylvania man charged in Licking County cryptocurrency fraud case

NEWARK, Ohio (WCMH) — A man from eastern Pennsylvania has been arrested and transported back to Licking County where it is alleged he defrauded two people of nearly $175,000 in a bitcoin scheme.

According to a criminal complaint out of Licking County courts, deputies with the Licking County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to Chestnut Hills Road in Newark on reports of fraud. The alleged victim, a 77-year-old man, reported that $140,000 had been stolen from him as part of a bitcoin scheme that had taken place over a couple of months.

The victim reported that in June he met “Lina” on Facebook, where she told him she was a financial advisor. Their chats moved to a different outlet and eventually he sent her money which was supposed to be invested in bitcoin.

Court documents state that the victim sent “Lina” $50,000 on Sept. 11, followed by an additional $90,000 – two checks made out for $40,000 and $50,000. Those checks were addressed to David Donbaugh, of York, Pennsylvania…
