Some Wegmans stores use facial recognition technology, raising privacy concerns

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHP) — The next time customers shop at Wegmans, their faces may be scanned along with their groceries – a practice that is raising new questions about privacy and data security.

Wegmans Food Markets confirmed that some of its stores use facial recognition technology as part of their security systems. The technology scans customers’ faces and stores biometric data so the system can identify individuals who may pose a security risk.

In a statement to CBS 21, Wegmans said “At Wegmans, the safety of our customers and employees is a top priority. Like many retailers, we use cameras to help identify individuals who pose a risk to our people, customers, or operation. In a small fraction of our stores located in communities that exhibit an elevated risk, we have deployed cameras equipped with facial recognition technology.”…
