Potter County woman sent phony warrant paperwork by scammers claiming to be Cumberland County Sheriff’s Deputies

CUMBERLAND COUNTY- A woman from Potter County is out thousands of dollars following another law enforcement scam, this time claiming to be from Cumberland County.

Pennsylvania State Police say that a 20-year-old Galeton, PA woman contacted Troopers from PSP Carlisle about a theft/fraud in which she was contacted by someone identifying themselves as an employee of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department. That unknown suspect (who claimed to be the CCSO) stated that the victim had an active arrest warrant and needed to pay $2,000. That unknown suspect would then send fraudulent warrant paperwork to the victim before the latter sent the funds.

Cumberland County nor any legitimate law enforcement agency will contact a person over the phone and solicit funds for a warrant. Officers/Deputies utilize certified mail and in-person visits and will NEVER ask for money via crypto, Paypal, gift cards, wire transfers, or other means. If you have a question about legitimacy of one of these calls (as police CAN contact you by phone but never to solicit money for court), double check with the department and ask for clarification…
