Restaurants adapt as diners eat out less: ‘The whole footprint has changed’

Ted Kalathas has been in business long enough to know what it takes to keep the doors open at Theo’s Bar & Grille in Lower Allen Township.

Lately, he’s noticed some diners skipping the $30 and $40 entrees at his 33-year-old establishment in favor of lower-priced appetizers and sandwiches, and, in some cases, people eating out less, maybe once a week instead of twice.

Diners are also eating out earlier, a trend he said started after the COVID-19 pandemic…
