Candidate bowed out to let friend take seat on York City School Board

Friendship prevailed over competition as York City’s elected school board chose between two candidates — one of them the mayor’s brother — to fill an empty seat.

The board unanimously voted for Halman Smith, a York City School graduate and co-owner of Comfort Zone Mattress who also volunteers with the Urban Scouts of York.

When he introduced himself to the board on Jan. 21 for this seat, he explained that he’s worked on budgets in his professional life and knows the pressures many district families are grappling with due to his volunteer work…
