Congregation continues story of York church that started 50 years before slavery ended

YORK, Pa. (WHTM) — A York church that was built about a half-century before slavery was abolished has a unique story that you can read about.

The Small Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church that sits along South Queen Street still opens its doors every Sunday, well, not the Sunday during the winter storm a few weeks ago. Pastor Marlon Carter is always excited to see everyone who comes.

“I can’t wait to see everybody,” Carter said. “Forty, fifty years before slavery was abolished, they were allowed to have a church in the city of York. I’m standing on the shoulders of several pastors that have gone on before me.”…
