Dauphin County nonprofit transforms old retirement home into place for unhoused

DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa. (WHP) — Dauphin County has become a leader in helping unhoused members of its community find stability in life and the latest nonprofit to open its doors to unhoused is LHM Social Services Foundation, which recently opened a new transitional housing facility on the border of Penbrook Borough and Susquehanna Township.

“There are many different service providers in our area doing great work for the unhoused,” said LHM Social Services Foundation CEO Amy Foerster. “We’re always really careful to make it clear that we want to supplement that good work, not supplant it.”

The organization, which started in 2023, had a new, nearly 15-acre facility donated by its board chair and began housing clients in early January. They have 58 total units, and 11 are being taken by 17 total inhabitants. Those include men, women, and children in both single units, and family sized units.
