9-Year-Old Who Drowned at Hersheypark Couldn’t Swim, Feared Deep Water

New details have emerged about the tragic drowning of 9-year-old Sophia Subedi at Hersheypark’s wave pool last summer, revealing the child couldn’t swim and was afraid of deep water.

According to a report released by the Dauphin County Coroner’s Office, Subedi drowned on July 24, 2025, in an incident that was ruled accidental. The investigation found that Subedi had gone to the park with a friend and the friend’s father, who briefly left the children to store their belongings.

The coroner’s report states that Subedi’s father later told officials his daughter “did not know how to swim” and was “very afraid of deep water.” Her only previous swimming experience had been in small kiddie pools, and she preferred to stay in shallow water…
