Pennsylvania insurance company fined over $500k, ordered to repay customers

(WHTM) — The Dauphin County-based health insurance company Aetna was fined over $500,000 and is being ordered to repay Pennsylvanians with interest for mental health parity law violations, the Pennsylvania Insurance Department (PID) announced on Tuesday.

A market conduct exam found that the insurance company committed several violations that negatively impacted policyholders, including filing incomplete claims files for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) services, delays in approving claims, flawed methods for reviewing mental health parity compliance, and failure to clearly list cost-sharing for ASD services in most plans, among others.

The PID says Aetna must pay a $550,000 penalty, improve its practices to ensure claims are properly filed on time, and repay affected Pennsylvanians with interest.
