Pa. lawmakers’ proposal to raise sales and income taxes, cut school property taxes

YORK, Pa. — A legislative proposal could raise sales and income taxes while cutting school property taxes.

With a bill in both the House and Senate, the Independent Fiscal Office released a study Monday looking at what would happen if property taxes were eliminated and replaced with higher taxes in three areas.

Sales tax would rise from 6% to 8%, some items like gum and clothing would be taxed at 2%, personal income tax would increase by nearly two points and certain retirement income would also be taxed…
