A rare 1966 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350H, part of the famed “Rent-A-Racer” program, has resurfaced after years out of public view and is scheduled to cross the auction block at the Carlisle Spring Collector Car Auction on April 24, 2026.
Identified as car number 6S1406, the vehicle is documented in the Shelby Registry and represents one of a limited production run tied to a unique collaboration between Shelby American and Hertz in 1966. The program offered high-performance Mustangs for rent, giving everyday drivers access to race-inspired vehicles. While production totals are debated, estimates place the number between 999 and 1,001 units, with fewer than 600 believed to still exist today.
This example is finished in Raven Black with gold Le Mans stripes, the signature color scheme associated with the Hertz program. It retains a numbers-matching driveline, including a high-performance 289 cubic-inch V8 engine rated at 306 horsepower and paired with a C4 three-speed automatic transmission. Though part of the engine stamp is obscured, visible digits are said to support its authenticity.
The car has undergone restoration and presents in well-maintained condition, featuring factory-style Magnum wheels, a steel-reinforced fiberglass hood with a functional scoop, and a black vinyl interior with bucket seats. The odometer currently reads 16,907 miles, with total mileage believed to be under 17,000.
Historical records trace the car’s early journey from shipment in March 1966 to Pennsylvania, where it was prepared for Hertz use. It later passed through several private owners across multiple states before disappearing from public record for an extended period. Its recent reappearance near Pittsburgh marks a significant development for collectors and enthusiasts.
The vehicle has been registered with the Shelby American Automobile Club and is accompanied by multiple historical documents. A recent inspection was conducted in March 2026, with a full report pending.
Now available for inspection by appointment, the GT350H offers collectors a rare opportunity to acquire a documented piece of American muscle car history with direct ties to one of the most recognizable performance programs of its era.
