Harrisburg Murder Suspect Bolts For Puerto Rico After 25-Year-Old’s Killing

A Harrisburg man accused of raping and killing a 25-year-old woman is believed to have fled to Puerto Rico, according to police, who say they have secured a warrant and are now asking the public for help finding him. According to CBS Pittsburgh, Rafael Duran Malave has been charged with criminal homicide and rape in the death of Amanda Abeana Makor. Makor was found unresponsive in her apartment on March 30, and investigators believe she was killed on March 28. The Susquehanna Township Police Department said a warrant for Duran Malave was issued Monday.

How investigators say it unfolded

Investigators identified Rafael Ivan Duran‑Malave, 32, and say surveillance footage and license‑plate reader data showed him driving the victim’s vehicle on March 28 while separate footage captured Makor walking home that same day, according to AOL. Officers responded around 11 a.m. on March 30 to a report of an unconscious woman and found Makor on the bathroom floor of her apartment.

The Dauphin County coroner ruled Makor’s death a homicide by asphyxia caused by multiple traumatic injuries, including strangulation and massive chest compression, and investigators say she had been sexually assaulted, AOL reported.

Police statement

“In order to protect the integrity of the investigation, no further information will be released at this time,” the Susquehanna Township Police Department said in a news release, as reported by CBS Pittsburgh. The department said the incident is believed to be isolated and that there is no known threat to the public. Authorities also say they believe Duran‑Malave flew from Harrisburg to Puerto Rico on the night the killing occurred.
