Bay Area student-athlete identified as driver who died after single vehicle crash in Livermore

The teenage driver who died after crashing into a concrete pillar in Livermore last week appears to have been a former San Ramon student-athlete and youth chess champion.

Officials identified Ashwin Punaroor as the driver who crashed into a pillar on southbound North Livermore Avenue around 2:40 a.m. on Aug. 24.

He appeared to be a senior at Dougherty Valley High School who competed in track and field.The U.S. Chess Federation recognized Punaroor for winning the Under 1200 chess rating section of the 2018 Best of the West Kids tournament with a 5-0 record…
