1,000 people evacuate East Bay Costco after refrigerant leak

(KRON) — Approximately 1,000 people were forced to evacuate a Costco in Concord due to a refrigerant leak, the Contra Costa County Fire Department said. The store since reopened.

The Costco is located at 24000 Monument Blvd. About 800 customers and 200 employees were inside the store.

Con Fire said that they learned of the leak at 2:06 p.m. Employees became aware of it when someone spotted a white cloud moving through the store.

No injuries have been reported, Con Fire said.

Images from the scene show a Hazmat truck outside the building. Con Fire said a medic was present as well in case anybody complains of injuries.

Refrigerant is a fluid used in air condition systems and heat pumps. Con Fire said depending on exposure, injuries from a leak can be mild or severe.
