Calif. desperately tries to curb one of the state’s most hated crimes

Gov. Gavin Newsom just signed four new bills that aim to crack down on sideshows, one of the most hated illegal activities in the Bay Area, his office announced. According to a Monday news release, the bills, which were introduced by Democratic and Republican assemblymembers across the state, aim to impose harsher penalties on drivers, spectators and promoters involved in the street takeovers – sending a strong message to anyone who even thinks about participating. The new laws – Assembly Bill 1978, AB 2186, AB 2807 and AB 3085 – standardize the terminology for sideshows while expanding officers’ authority to impound vehicles, making illegal street spectacles easier to crack down on.
