Breed’s Rise to Power

London Breed’s ascent in San Francisco politics is a story of perseverance and ambition. Born and raised in the Western Addition neighborhood, Breed overcame a challenging upbringing marked by poverty and family struggles. Her political career began as an intern for Mayor Willie Brown in 1999, laying the foundation for her future in public service.

Breed’s official entry into politics came in 2012 when she was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, taking office in January 2013. Her leadership qualities were quickly recognized, and she was elected President of the Board of Supervisors in 2015.

A pivotal moment in Breed’s career came in December 2017 when she briefly became Acting Mayor following the sudden death of Mayor Ed Lee. Although she was temporarily removed from this position by the Board of Supervisors, Breed went on to win the mayoral special election in June 2018, making history as San Francisco’s first Black woman mayor.
