Walgreens reportedly closing 12 stores in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO ( KRON ) — Walgreens will reportedly close 12 stores in San Francisco next month. According to separate reports in the San Francisco Standard and the San Francisco Chronicle , the pharmacy chain will close the stores due to rising business costs.

The locations set to close include the Market Street location where Banko Brown, an unarmed 24-year-old Black transgender man , was shot to death by a security guard in a shoplifting incident in 2023.

The locations reportedly set to close are:

  • 3201 Divisadero Street
  • 1363 Divisadero Street
  • 825 Market Street
  • 1750 Noriega Street
  • 5280 Geary Boulevard
  • 1524 Polk Street
  • 1301 Franklin Street
  • 1189 Potrero Street
  • 135 Powell Street
  • 1630 Ocean Avenue
  • 5300 3rd Street

Last year, Walgreens announced it would be closing 1,200 nationwide over the next three years. According to a report in NPR , the pharmacy location closures were part of a plan for a financial turnaround as the retail chain faces competition and lower prescription payouts.
