California prisons increase security measures amid surge in violence behind bars

(FOX40.COM) –The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is taking additional security measures in response to a surge in violence against staff and inmates.

On Saturday, officials announced the placement of high-security sections, referred to as Level IV, within its facilities. The new measure means that inmates housed in those units will be highly restricted, though not necessarily on lockdown.

Inmates housed in Level IV sections will have an armed perimeter. They will have access to essential services such as medical care, legal proceedings, and other critical appointments, but activities will be restricted, according to CDCR.

Instead of being with the general public, meals will be delivered directly to housing units, and showers and all other movement will be conducted in a controlled manner. Phone, ViaPath tablet calls, and visiting will be temporarily restricted…
