Bay Area shoppers brace for a change in their retail habitat as Kohl’s, the nationwide department store chain, has confirmed the closure of five local stores. Customers have until the end of this weekend to visit the locations in Fremont at 43782 Christy St., Mountain View at 350 Showers Dr., Napa at 1116 First St., Pleasanton at 4525 Rosewood Dr., and San Rafael at 5010 Northgate Dr. These Bay Area closures are part of a larger group of 27 stores Kohl’s is shutting down by April 2025, as reported by NBC Bay Area.
As per Hoodline, Kohl’s chief executive officer Tom Kingsbury commented on the closures, emphasizing, “We always take these decisions very seriously.” The company cites underperformance as a key factor in this move, aiming to focus on profitable aspects of the business and its long-term growth strategy. Additionally, the San Bernardino e-commerce fulfillment center is also being closed due to increased efficiencies in newer facilities.
Despite the downsizing, Kohl’s has expressed its commitment to affected employees, noting on its website, per Hoodline, “All associates have been informed, and offered a competitive severance package or the ability to apply to other open roles at Kohl’s.” Mass layoff notice filings reveal that at least 60 employees will be impacted at the Pleasanton location.
