California Seniors Hit by Social Security Glitch, Payment Concerns Rise Following Outage Reports

Seniors and low-income residents across California are keeping a close eye on their April Social Security benefits following online outages and a mistaken message from the Social Security Administration (SSA).

The SSA confirmed Tuesday it is investigating disruptions to the “my Social Security” portal, which impacted users trying to access their benefits. Some Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients—including many in Los Angeles, San Diego, and the Central Valley—reported a concerning notice stating they were “not receiving benefits.” The SSA has since clarified the message was issued in error.

About 7.4 million Americans rely on SSI, according to a 2023 SSA report.
